The most confusing detail: which seconds hand is running?
On many chronographs, the long central seconds hand remains stopped during ordinary wear and moves only when the chronograph is running. Normal timekeeping seconds appear on a small subdial.
This is intentional. Leaving the large chronograph seconds hand running continuously may consume more energy or add unnecessary wear depending on the movement. Some chronographs are designed differently, so use the manual rather than assuming the watch is broken.
What the subdials usually show
Common layouts include:
- Small running seconds for normal timekeeping
- A 30-minute or 60-minute elapsed-time counter
- A 12-hour elapsed-time counter
- A 24-hour indicator that is linked to the main time and is not a chronograph counter

How to use a basic two-pusher chronograph
This is the common sequence, not a universal command.
1. Prepare the watch
- Make sure the crown is fully pushed in or correctly screwed down.
- Confirm that the chronograph hands point to their zero positions.
- Check that the watch has enough battery charge or power reserve.
- Do not operate pushers under water unless the model explicitly allows it.
2. Start timing
Press and release the upper pusher once. The chronograph seconds hand should begin moving.
3. Stop timing
Press the upper pusher again. The timing hands stop, allowing you to read elapsed seconds, minutes and hours.
4. Reset
After the chronograph has stopped, press the lower pusher. The timing hands should return to zero.
Do not repeatedly force a pusher that feels stuck, and do not assume the lower pusher can reset the mechanism while it is running. Some specialized movements allow different behaviour, but the manual must confirm it.
How to read elapsed time
Suppose the central chronograph seconds hand points to 42 seconds, the minute counter points to 7 and the hour counter remains at zero. The measured interval is 7 minutes and 42 seconds.
Read the counters from the largest unit to the smallest:
- Elapsed hours
- Elapsed minutes
- Elapsed seconds
- Fractions of a second, when provided
Some counters advance continuously; others jump at intervals. Both can be normal for the movement.
What is a tachymeter?
A tachymeter is a scale that converts the time required to complete a known unit of distance into an average rate per hour. It is commonly printed around the bezel or dial of a chronograph.
A basic example:
- Start the chronograph at the beginning of a measured kilometre or mile.
- Stop it at the end of that same distance.
- Read the tachymeter value aligned with the elapsed-seconds hand.
If one kilometre takes 30 seconds, the scale indicates 120 kilometres per hour. The same logic works for miles per hour when the measured distance is one mile.
Tachymeter scales have usable time ranges. A standard scale often works only when one unit takes less than 60 seconds. Some watches use extended or spiral scales. Follow the exact manual.
What are split time, flyback and rattrapante functions?
Split time
Some quartz and digital chronographs can temporarily freeze a displayed result while timing continues internally. The exact button sequence varies.
Flyback chronograph
A flyback chronograph can reset and immediately restart timing with one command while the chronograph is running. Do not attempt this on a conventional chronograph.
Rattrapante or split-seconds chronograph
A rattrapante uses two chronograph seconds hands to compare intermediate events. It is mechanically complex and operated differently from a basic chronograph.
These terms describe real functional differences, not merely styling. Verify the movement before using advanced commands.
How long can a chronograph time?
The maximum depends on the movement. Common limits include 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 12 hours or 24 hours. Some movements stop automatically at the limit, while others continue or cycle.
Citizen's B612 instructions, for example, specify a 60-minute chronograph. Other Citizen movements can measure for 12 hours. This is why a generic video cannot replace the exact calibre manual.
Does running a chronograph drain the battery?
It can increase power use in quartz watches because extra motors and hands are operating. Citizen warns for some movements that leaving the chronograph running can rapidly reduce battery life.
Mechanical chronographs also use stored energy and add load to the movement. Whether continuous running is acceptable depends on the design and condition. Stop and reset the chronograph when you no longer need it unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
Why do the hands not reset exactly to zero?
A hand that returns slightly before or after zero may need a hand-reference or zero-position adjustment. Many quartz chronographs provide a button sequence for correcting the reference position after battery replacement, shock or magnetic disturbance.
Do not pull off or manually push the hands. Find the calibre number on the case back, use the official manual and follow the correction procedure exactly. Mechanical chronograph misalignment or irregular operation normally requires a watchmaker.
